This saying above is often believed by many to be a fallacy. I used to believe that also.
A lot of us have this belief that the friends we keep have little or no influence on what we will become or who we will be..Often times I have heard people say things like;
“I can’t get influenced by friends”
“Environment doesn’t affect me”etc.
Of a truth, there are people that keeping bad friends can’t influence them to be bad. .
I know a guy, James by name, currently in 400level in the university, his roommate since his 100level, Kelvin is a chain smoker, yet he never succumbed to that habit.
Despite sharing the same room with Kelvin for 4years he has not for once smoked.
There are lots of people like James that don’t easily succumb to the bad habits of their friends.
Let me assume that you are of the school of thought that you are like James and don’t easily get influenced by your friend’s ill habits..
YOU ARE NOT GETTING NEGATIVELY INFLUENCED, no doubts, but ARE YOU GETTING MOTIVATED? .
There are other benefits of keeping the right company of friends rather than getting influenced..
WHAT COMPANIES DO YOU KEEP? Who do you relate with?..
ASK YOURSELF THESE 3 QUESTIONS.
1. DO THEY MOTIVATE YOU?.
I am a living testimony to this. The right company of friends, mentors, coaches, etc have a way of keeping you motivated.
If your friends have the same goals as you, you will always move forward.
There are times I stay up late at night trying to work on a project, and when I want to give in to sleep, I would make a post on my status expecting no one to be online or see it. Lo and behold, a lot of people on my contact will view it.
Subconsciously I will tell myself, If these people are still awake, why should I sleep.
I will be motivated to stay awake longer and finish work.
2. DO THEY SUPPORT YOU?.
The company you keep, do they support you to be the best version of yourself or they look down on you.
I am a living testimony of this also.
Most times when I make posts on my status, Facebook, or Instagram, I get positive reactions (likes, comments, shares) from my friends.
They are always the first to comment and share my posts. This little gesture has a way of bringing out the best in me.
Oftentimes they will drop comments like
” GO GIRL”,
” I AM PROUD OF YOU”
“I LOOK UP TO YOU CYNTHIA”
” YOU ARE MY ROLE MODEL” ETC..
Comments like these are one of the reasons I stay awake late at night most of the time developing myself.
These comments and reactions subconsciously make me want to work harder to meet up to their expectations and continually make them proud.
3. DO THEY RECOMMEND YOU?
A lot of big projects I have handled are as a result of recommendations from my friends.
I have had free mentions from some of my mentors and coaches on their status that blew me up.
Your sincere answers to this question will help you categorize the kind of company you keep.
The company you keep determines a lot about you. The people you relate with, the kind of information you are exposed to, the people you listen to, etc. matters a lot.
The easiest way to model your life in line with that of your role model is to relate with the people they relate with.
This will get you exposed to a certain percentage of the information they have and sharpen your life in a way you never imagined..
Don’t segregate, but be wise with regards to your company of friends.
